“Language, identity and racism: a linguistic approach / Lengua, identidad y racismo: un enfoque lingüístico” Conference

Quick Overview

Language, identity and racism: a linguistic approach/ Lengua, identidad y racismo: un enfoque lingüístico

The emerging field of raciolinguistics has been growing rapidly in recent decades, and the Spanish-speaking world has been the setting for some of the most exciting debates around this issue

This two-day conference, the very first of its kind in Ireland, will gather together linguists, educators and writers, in order to facilitate a discussion of linguistic change in the context of key issues around language and race that are becoming ever more relevant in the twenty-first century. The conference aims to explore various ways in which the racialization of language can contribute to unequal power formations which impact on every aspect of society, including educational policies and media discourse, and lead to the stigmatization of language practices, both within and beyond the borders of the Spanish-speaking world.

The conference will take place in the CACSSS Seminar Room, in the O’Rahilly Building of  University College Cork on Thursday and Friday, September 5th and 6th.

Registration for this conference includes attendance at both days of the conference, a conference welcome pack and tea/coffee with a light lunch on both days.
